Haemodialysis is also known as "blood purification". In this process, blood is cleaned with the aid
of a dialyzer, in which the blood flows along a thin membrane and, by
diffusion, delivers all the toxins into a highly pure water-salt solution. This
type of treatment must be applied several times a week. It takes between four
and six hours and is carried out in a dialysis centre.
This method has the disadvantage of being very time-consuming and stressful for the patient since blood cannot be continuously cleaned.
Another disadvantage is that blood thinners must be administered to the patient and a shunt must be made.
Bags are used, for example, for haemodialysates (pre-mix sodium bicarbonate) but also as a solution for cleaning the fluid channels of the haemodialysis machine (citric acid).
